Hiking safety tips
Whether you’re a casual hiker that only occasionally hits the trails or an avid trekker that goes for more extensive hikes – the proper gear for the journey makes a world of difference. Rucksack manufacturers like Osprey, Gelert and Outwell are all reputable names, but the greatest pack in the world is useless if not stocked properly.
There are numerous reasons to pack more than you think you’ll need. First off, the weather can be changeable, so be prepared. Sure, it’s a dream to think of yourself as footloose and fancy free, but if you’ve ever been on a more difficult trek that includes rain and hail, or returning far later than intended then you know that it’s imperative to have a well-stocked pack.
Does your pack include a first aid kit? How about an extra pair of socks and extra batteries for your headlamp? Of course you have plenty of water but what about a good supply of healthy snacks? A compass is also essential, as well as safety matches, a multipurpose tool such as a Leatherman is also very good to keep on hand. And don’t forget the sun cream and insect repellent, as well. Plus be sure to research the surroundings before going out to learn if you’ll need protection such as bear spray or the like. And always tell someone where you’ll be hiking and when you’ve come back out again.
A hiking trip can be a wonderful, soul-nurturing experience, or it can be a trip from hell – the outcome is largely a direct result of how prepared you are.
