Who Can File A Mesothelioma Claim?
Anyone that has been diagnosed with mesothelioma is eligible to file a claim for compensation as long as the statute of limitations hasn’t expired. You generally must file the claim within 3 years of the diagnosis and if a family member has died, you will need to check the statute of limitations in your specific area.
Victims of mesothelioma come from various trades and skills and performed a wide variety of job duties. Exposure to asbestos generally occurred both during and before the mid 1970′s. And, mesothelioma has been diagnosed in thousands of victims from all parts of the world.
Some of the jobs in which people were exposed to asbestos include insulators, steel workers, ship fitters, pipe fitters, brake mechanics and maintenance workers. But, exposure was possible to any worker that was exposed to dust and asbestos fibers in the work place.
However, you may be diagnosed with mesothelioma even if you’ve never had a job in your life, or never worked around asbestos. Mesothelioma can easily be contracted from secondary exposure. For example, a housewife could develop the disease from being exposed to asbestos on her husband’s clothing.
Many people contracted the disease from simply living in an area where there was an asbestos manufacturing plant. But, even if you contracted the disease through a secondary source you are still eligible to file a mesothelioma claim for all the pain, suffering and expenses that you’ve incurred.
While asbestos remains a health hazard today in many of the older buildings, it is no longer in use in new construction. It is however still found in some brake shoes that are made today. If you have been diagnosed with this terrible disease, or suspect that you might have it, you should file a claim as quickly as you can.
